1) Welcome to Tips and Gems!
Introduction :
This e-zine publication is themed around real life events. Our main computer that Diana works on went kaboom after she installed a Windows SP3 update. She was avoiding installing SP3 but apparently automatic update snuck it by and the result was a total Operating System melt down, and consequently our failure to send out the ezine last issue.
So be aware before you install an update to your computer or favorite software that you look up the notes about that update so you aren’t left holding the bag.
Update from Diana:
The problem was that the PC has an AMD rather than an Intel chip, and has an OEM version of Windows installed (What you get when Windows comes installed on the machine.) OEM versions from Hewlett Packard and many other companies include a driver in Windows that is actually for Intel boards, simply because it has caused no problems in the past on AMD PCs and that way the manufacturers can use just one copy of the Windows OS for all their computers.
Trouble is, I discovered, (only after reformatting and reinstalling everything twice and then eventually finding a forum post online with info about it) if that driver isn’t removed before SP3 installs, once you reboot Windows won’t load again, you get an endless hardware failure blue screen of death instead. Nice, huh?
Happily, thanks to my husband Tom’s diligent searching and Jesper Johansson’s blog all is now well. I did lose a small bit of data, but my dedicated backing up saved us from much loss, and now my computer runs faster and cleaner. (No thanks to HP and Microsoft.)

The Perils of Updating your Computer

It turns out that a lot of times updates sabotage your computer rather than fix them. I wish that I could say that there was a fool proof way to safely update your computer without the possibility of losing data. I’m sorry, there isn’t.
If you want to save your data you will have to back it up. And not to just one place, but to several places. This will not save your registry and all the programs that you painstakingly installed and customized. All of your customizations will be gone. Everything will have to be redone.
You can install a second drive and a seperate operating system on your computer to hopefully defray any time you might be spending redoing the other drive after a mishap update. But in the end it is a tedious, labrous thing to have to redo a computer. And for us it takes days.
Thankfully, we have more than one drive, an external drive, three other computers and a server to backup to. Most people don’t have this but then most people don’t run their own online business. So the moral of this story is never ever trust an update. If your computer is necessary to your income, don’t install new programs without at least setting a restore point first (on Windows PCs).
If you need to do updates then back up all of your data first. Mirror or copy your registry to a safe place. It’s also not a bad idea to reinstall your operating system once a year in order to clean out any garbage and keep the operating system running. With regular backups that won’t be a problem.
There are a lot of online programs that will automatically backup the data on your computer for you like Carbonite, Mozy, Amazon and IDrive. That way your data is stored in a completely different geographical location. The disadvantage of this type of backup is that it is much slower to restore things if you lose a lot of data. The advantage is that even a natural disaster probably won’t take all your info.
There are also software programs that will backup to a separate partition, or better yet to a backup hard drive. We use a USB hard drive with enclosure for backups, and have used software like Acronis, Arkeia, SuperDuper, etc. Currently we use Acronis to make a full backup of everything but our document and email directories every week or so. Then we use a program called SyncBackSE (There are many others available, some at no cost, like GoodSync from the makers of RoboForm.) to automatically back up our documents, images, pictures and email every night while we are sleeping.

Windows:

Of course you still have the option of backing the system up so it can be restored in full. (Anyone knows of something to save your custom settings for Linux/Unix, Please, let me know.)

How and When to Run "Fixers" for your Computer. By Diana Ward
To maintain your computer, here is a simple schedule that can use to keep your computer running smoothly:
1. Run and update your virus scan every week.
2. Run and update your adware scan every week.
3. Run and update your registry cleaner/fixer every day.
4. Run a defragmenation on your drive every week.
5. Run real time scanning to block viruses and adware constantly.
6. Run your cleaning utilities once a week.
If you do all of this and you notice that your computer is running slower and slower, first try updating your hardware drivers. If that fails, you probably will have to redo your operating system soon before it crashes. The operating system running slower or suddenly rebooting itself over and over is probably the only sign you are going to get before your operating system crashes for good.
You can always run these scans and fixers while you are not working on the computer. That way you aren’t losing any time that you would be on the computer getting your work done.

Installing a Script on Your Webite
Did you know that not all servers are created equal? The type of webserver that hosts your website will determine what programs or scripts you can install on that server. For instance, if you have a Linux/Unix server or you have your site on a Linux/Unix server you will have to use PHP scripts not ASP (.asp works only on Windows Machine). You will have to watch carefully the programs you want to install.
Often when you buy a script there is more than one option for the script type. You just have to be careful to choose the right one. Then there are compliance issues with certain scripts. For instance, some programs or scripts will require up to date Zend optimizer or Ioncube or even ImageMagick installed on the server before they will run. Normally the script author’s website will list the requirements for the script. If you don’t know whether your server has some of them, simply ask your web host.
Sometimes you install the script often it will tell you what it needs. But sometimes it can only be found in the authors install notes. In any event you will have to tell your webhost or datacenter that you need that particular program installed on the server that is running your site.
In order to better understand what is compatible with your server either look in your hosting account control panel or ask your web host. That way you will know if anything needs changing before you decide to install a script to run on your website. (Note, if your website is hosted with A Quality Host (us), we will be happy to answer your questions and even install any extras you will need if it is possible.

9) ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS — Even If You Haven’t Asked Them Yet!
Question:
Is it possible to ‘repair’ Windows XP operating system without reformatting the hard disk?
Answer:
Yeah, it’s pretty easy. 1. Insert your original Windows XP CD. You still have the CD, right? 2. Restart your computer, and, when prompted, press any key to boot off the CD. 3. You’ll get to a screen that talks about the recovery console. Skip that, and proceed like you’re going to install windows again. Don’t worry, you’re not going to lose anything. 4. After the license agreement, you’ll get a screen that lists the partitions on your hard drive. There may be only one. If there are more than one, choose the one that you know has Wndows on it, or choose the largest one. Then, if memory serves correct, you’ll be offer the choice to press enter to install Windows to the partition (that’s NOT what we want) or to press ‘R’ to repair. That’s what we want. 5. Follow the rest of the directions.
An alternative is to, from inside of Windows, go to Start, then Run, then type (no quotes) “sfc /scannow”. That’s the system file checker, it verifies all files and replaces any with errors. Supplied by WikiAnswers.

What type of Internet connection is best for you?

From dial-up (modem phone connection to the computer) to T3, what exactly can you do and what is best for your area, situation and abilities? It’s not easy trying to choose what type of connection for connecting your computer to the Internet is best. Most people only really have the choice of Modem Dial-up, DSL, Cable or Satelite, the fourth being the least well known.
But what do You need? Well, in most cases that is determined by the area in which you live. In some areas of the world you can only use a dial-up ISP and a modem. In other areas such as the world’s big cities you have a whole host of choices. The areas that typically can’t get cable or DSL are small towns or places out in the country away from the big cities.
Here in the United States and no doubt other countries, places in the country don’t have to get only modem. They can get a satelite Internet connection. They aren’t as fast as DSL or Cable but they are much faster than dial-up and if you need access to the Internet because you are running a business online this will be a better option for you than dial-up.
To DSL or not to DSL Well if your town is wired with old telephone lines then DSL isn’t a very good bet for you. Also, if you can’t get Cable TV then most likely you can’t get Cable Internet either. In some areas DSL is faster than cable because newer telephone lines have been installed and the cable is working off of older or too busy cable lines. In some areas it’s the opposite. The best way to see which one is faster is to test from the home of a friend who has DSL and then test at the home of another friend who has Cable and try them out for yourself. Take into account also that the more people in your town who are using DSL the slower it will run and the same goes for Cable.
Cable in general is faster than DSL because it has more potential to go faster, not that it absolutely will. But in general you want to buy the fastest connection you can get. Why? Because not only does it speed your viewing of the Internet and so improve your working potential, but it also opens up a whole new way for you to access the Internet. You can watch videos and download music or watch movies with a faster connection. You can download or upload files in a reasonable time period. Also the faster and easier the connection the better your computer runs, because the faster your connection speed to the Internet the less load on your computer to run the browser.
But what is this T3 thing you mentioned? Good question. There are three types of cable that are just for business and government, and they are T1, T2 or T3. They are the fastest Internet connection available and the general public can’t use them. Why? Well, it has to do with security issues and the need for very fast Internet for their jobs. The assumption is that we the public don’t need the extra security and faster Internet. Fair or not, that is the way it is unless you have a legal business and are willing to pay the high fees. ————–

3) OPERATING SYSTEM TIP
Optimize your Internet Connection
There are programs that will optimize your Internet connection so that it runs a smoothly and as fast as possible. These programs do change settings on your computer so be aware of that, but they only do it in so far as to make your Internet connection as fast and bug free as possible.
Can these programs affect other settings that you need for programs or your computer? Well, yes, anything is possible, that is why it is important to back up your computer before you change any settings on it. But if you find something isn’t working the way it used to or the way it should after you optimize your Internet connection then you should go back to the program and restore your old settings to see if that is truly the cause or some other software glitch. But is optimization worth the risk? It certainly is, in our experience. Running a registry optimization program such as RegistryFix or the like daily has majorly reduced how often we are forced to do major repair work on Windows XP, how often programs crash, and the like. Just be careful to choose a program that is well recommended. Check at a website like www.majorgeeks.com for their recommendations, some of the programs out there on the WWW that claim to be optimization tools are actually malicious programs that give you false positives to get you to buy the professional version, or even install adware on your computer without your permission or even your knowledge.

How to Optimize your Computer By Diana Ward
A lot of people are unaware that you have to do maintenance on your computer just like on your car or it will eventually break down. There are some simple things that you can do to maintain your computer or “optimize” it so that melt down does not occur. There are even programs that will help you to perform this maintenance and you can schedule the maintenance so that it happens at a time when it is convenient for you (ie. when you are not working on the computer) and you don’t have to regularly go and manually do it yourself.
There are many ways that you can optimize your computer. One way is to Defragment or “Defrag” your hard drive. This is a lot like filing your papers properly and in order in your file cabinet. If your drive doesn’t have a free space large enough for all the data of a particular file, when you save the file your hard drive will save data to itself wherever space is available and not necessarily with the rest of the file data where it should be for your computer to run fast and efficiently. So when you send the computer back to the drive for that file, the operating system may have to pull data from several different parts of the hard drive just to make up that one document or program. This greatly slows down the processing time of your computer.
A Defragmentation Program will essentially go into the hard drive and reorder it so that all the files and programs are in the right spots and can be accessed quickly and efficiently by your operating system, not to mention putting all the free space in one place so that the computer can now better use what space is available and can write to it more easily. Some defragmenting programs will even sort the data so that things that are commonly accessed are in locations on the drive disk that are more quickly accessed by the OS.
Another optimization process you should do for your PC is to clean out all the junk. Over time and Internet searching you accumulate files, cookies and even small programs that can slow down your computer and fill up your hard drive. There are many software programs that will clean out all the unused, unwanted files and programs so that your hard drive has space and your computer runs faster. One that is free and works well if you carefully follow the directions is called CCleaner. You can download it and many other useful freeware or shareware programs at www.snapfiles.com. (Snapfiles is a good source of software, and seems to also be very trustworthy. We have used it for many years.)
Another way your Windows computer can be optimized is to reset the page file. The page file is a large file that is set aside for Windows to use for a "swap file". You can tell Windows how to set it for you or there are software programs that will make recommendations and set it for you. You can also defragment your pagefile and your RAM or working memory. (I don’t know much about optimizing McIntosh or Linux computers, if you do, we’d welcome a helpful article for reprinting here.)
There are also virus scanners and adware scanners that will check your computer for viruses and unwanted programs that can transmit your data to a third party. These are very destructive to your computer and you should have a virus scanner at least on your computer running at all times checking for viruses, especially in email, and also run at least the Windows Firewall if not a better third party firewall like Zonealarm.
One program that we use and like is called System Mechanic which has all of these maintence features rolled into one. It isn’t free but it is worth the price for the convenience and the saving of your computer to live for another day. Answer:
Sounds like your either have a virus, trojans, or your computer needs to be optimized. Probably all of the above if your computer is still running with only the maintenance programs that were on it when you bought it. You need to get a program like Norton AV and Utilities, System Mechanic or PC Tools and run the program if it isn’t already too late. Other than that you should try and save as much or your important data as possible and reinstall Windows. Sorry, but that’s the way it often goes if you haven’t maintained your computer right along as soon as you got it.
