What type of Internet connection is best for you?

From dial-up (modem phone connection to the computer) to T3, what exactly can you do and what is best for your area, situation and abilities? It’s not easy trying to choose what type of connection for connecting your computer to the Internet is best. Most people only really have the choice of Modem Dial-up, DSL, Cable or Satelite, the fourth being the least well known.
But what do You need? Well, in most cases that is determined by the area in which you live. In some areas of the world you can only use a dial-up ISP and a modem. In other areas such as the world’s big cities you have a whole host of choices. The areas that typically can’t get cable or DSL are small towns or places out in the country away from the big cities.
Here in the United States and no doubt other countries, places in the country don’t have to get only modem. They can get a satelite Internet connection. They aren’t as fast as DSL or Cable but they are much faster than dial-up and if you need access to the Internet because you are running a business online this will be a better option for you than dial-up.
To DSL or not to DSL Well if your town is wired with old telephone lines then DSL isn’t a very good bet for you. Also, if you can’t get Cable TV then most likely you can’t get Cable Internet either. In some areas DSL is faster than cable because newer telephone lines have been installed and the cable is working off of older or too busy cable lines. In some areas it’s the opposite. The best way to see which one is faster is to test from the home of a friend who has DSL and then test at the home of another friend who has Cable and try them out for yourself. Take into account also that the more people in your town who are using DSL the slower it will run and the same goes for Cable.
Cable in general is faster than DSL because it has more potential to go faster, not that it absolutely will. But in general you want to buy the fastest connection you can get. Why? Because not only does it speed your viewing of the Internet and so improve your working potential, but it also opens up a whole new way for you to access the Internet. You can watch videos and download music or watch movies with a faster connection. You can download or upload files in a reasonable time period. Also the faster and easier the connection the better your computer runs, because the faster your connection speed to the Internet the less load on your computer to run the browser.
But what is this T3 thing you mentioned? Good question. There are three types of cable that are just for business and government, and they are T1, T2 or T3. They are the fastest Internet connection available and the general public can’t use them. Why? Well, it has to do with security issues and the need for very fast Internet for their jobs. The assumption is that we the public don’t need the extra security and faster Internet. Fair or not, that is the way it is unless you have a legal business and are willing to pay the high fees. ————–

Optimize your Internet Connection
There are programs that will optimize your Internet connection so that it runs a smoothly and as fast as possible. These programs do change settings on your computer so be aware of that, but they only do it in so far as to make your Internet connection as fast and bug free as possible.
Can these programs affect other settings that you need for programs or your computer? Well, yes, anything is possible, that is why it is important to back up your computer before you change any settings on it. But if you find something isn’t working the way it used to or the way it should after you optimize your Internet connection then you should go back to the program and restore your old settings to see if that is truly the cause or some other software glitch. But is optimization worth the risk? It certainly is, in our experience. Running a registry optimization program such as RegistryFix or the like daily has majorly reduced how often we are forced to do major repair work on Windows XP, how often programs crash, and the like. Just be careful to choose a program that is well recommended. Check at a website like www.majorgeeks.com for their recommendations, some of the programs out there on the WWW that claim to be optimization tools are actually malicious programs that give you false positives to get you to buy the professional version, or even install adware on your computer without your permission or even your knowledge.

How to Optimize your Computer By Diana Ward
A lot of people are unaware that you have to do maintenance on your computer just like on your car or it will eventually break down. There are some simple things that you can do to maintain your computer or “optimize” it so that melt down does not occur. There are even programs that will help you to perform this maintenance and you can schedule the maintenance so that it happens at a time when it is convenient for you (ie. when you are not working on the computer) and you don’t have to regularly go and manually do it yourself.
There are many ways that you can optimize your computer. One way is to Defragment or “Defrag” your hard drive. This is a lot like filing your papers properly and in order in your file cabinet. If your drive doesn’t have a free space large enough for all the data of a particular file, when you save the file your hard drive will save data to itself wherever space is available and not necessarily with the rest of the file data where it should be for your computer to run fast and efficiently. So when you send the computer back to the drive for that file, the operating system may have to pull data from several different parts of the hard drive just to make up that one document or program. This greatly slows down the processing time of your computer.
A Defragmentation Program will essentially go into the hard drive and reorder it so that all the files and programs are in the right spots and can be accessed quickly and efficiently by your operating system, not to mention putting all the free space in one place so that the computer can now better use what space is available and can write to it more easily. Some defragmenting programs will even sort the data so that things that are commonly accessed are in locations on the drive disk that are more quickly accessed by the OS.
Another optimization process you should do for your PC is to clean out all the junk. Over time and Internet searching you accumulate files, cookies and even small programs that can slow down your computer and fill up your hard drive. There are many software programs that will clean out all the unused, unwanted files and programs so that your hard drive has space and your computer runs faster. One that is free and works well if you carefully follow the directions is called CCleaner. You can download it and many other useful freeware or shareware programs at www.snapfiles.com. (Snapfiles is a good source of software, and seems to also be very trustworthy. We have used it for many years.)
Another way your Windows computer can be optimized is to reset the page file. The page file is a large file that is set aside for Windows to use for a "swap file". You can tell Windows how to set it for you or there are software programs that will make recommendations and set it for you. You can also defragment your pagefile and your RAM or working memory. (I don’t know much about optimizing McIntosh or Linux computers, if you do, we’d welcome a helpful article for reprinting here.)
There are also virus scanners and adware scanners that will check your computer for viruses and unwanted programs that can transmit your data to a third party. These are very destructive to your computer and you should have a virus scanner at least on your computer running at all times checking for viruses, especially in email, and also run at least the Windows Firewall if not a better third party firewall like Zonealarm.
One program that we use and like is called System Mechanic which has all of these maintence features rolled into one. It isn’t free but it is worth the price for the convenience and the saving of your computer to live for another day. You can also pick up some free programs like Advanced WindowsCare Personal 2.8.1 from http://www.iobit.com/ that will do basically the same things. ————–

Answer:
Sounds like your either have a virus, trojans, or your computer needs to be optimized. Probably all of the above if your computer is still running with only the maintenance programs that were on it when you bought it. You need to get a program like Norton AV and Utilities, System Mechanic or PC Tools and run the program if it isn’t already too late. Other than that you should try and save as much or your important data as possible and reinstall Windows. There are many ways to save and store your information now that there really is no excuse not to back up vital files or personal files on your computer. If you are new to the computer world you may not know but if you have been around a computer you should know by now that data on a computer is all just ones and zeros and if a one becomes a zero you are in big trouble.
Corrupted files and viruses will over time kill your operating system rendering your computer useless and your files gone. That is why it is so important to backup your computer. Most computer operating systems come with a automatic backup for the registry in case something happens. But not always does the backup fix what broke in the first place.
There are many components for the computer, programs and services that will backup your data for you in case the worst happens. Components like backup hard drives, flash drives, CD’s, DVD’s can all hold data that you want to save in case something happens to your computer. Programs like Genie Backup Manager, NTI BackupNow!, NovaStor NovaBackup, Handy Backup and Double Image. And services like Carbonite, Acpana Data Deposit Box, Connected Data Protector, FirstBackup, Pro-Softnet’s IBackup, and Xdrive.
Keeping only one backup isn’t good enough now a days. You should have a backup of at least vital files on DVD, backup drive, off-site and on the internet somewhere. This is an assurity that your files will be there if anything at all should happen.
In some cases you have sensitive files that if they should fall into the wrong hands would devistate you. That is what encryption is for so that you can protect your backup. In most cases should your backup fall into someone elses hands the encryption renders it useless to them since most people can not crack encryption.

Backup is the activity of copying files or databases so that they will be preserved in case of equipment failure or other catastrophe. How to Backup your Website By Nicole Ward
In some cases people use a service to create their website and are unaware of how to backup their website. Backing up your website is a good way to keep your information and website safe should anything happen. Servers can crash and hardware does fail and if you are using a hosting service that isn’t responsible they will not have backups of your website on hand to restore for you. You will have to restore your website yourself or pay the service that created the website to begin with to restore it for you. In most cases any changes that you have made since the website was created will be lost.
It is important for you to backup your website just in case anything happens. In some cases people will hack your site and destroy your website for their own ends. In other cases your website will be held hostage by corrupt hosting companies or web designers. You need to have backups for these and more eventualities.
If you have access to your CPanel or hosting service control panel for your domain in most cases you can get the backup simply by loggin into your hosting account and clicking on the backup link. If you don’t have this information then you need to get it from your hosting service. You need to backup your website and any databases you have. This should be done everytime you make a change. In some cases once a day if you have members to your website and you database is constantly being updated because of your new members.
The important thing to understand is that you are ultimately responsible for your website and you are the one that will pay should you not backup your website. In costs hundreds of dollars to create a website and you can simply protect your investment by backing your website up to your computer.

Answer:
Yes there is. But it will take some computer knowledge to do. In some cases you can hire someone to do it for you. And you should already have a backup of files that you didn’t want to lose but in the event that something happened to your backup or you haven’t backed up your computer in a while there are programs that will bypass the Operating System and retrieve you files that you just can’t live without. Here is where a friend with a computer comes in handy because you will need to download the software and burn it to a CD. Then you will have to go into your CMOS and tell the computer to boot from CD so that you can run the software on the CD instead of the computer trying to load the software on the harddrive that is not running. You can find free programs that will act like an Operating System and retrieve your files so that you can copy them to something else. You then can reinstall your Operating System on your computer. If you don’t know what a CMOS is and how to access it and switch your boot file then you should hire someone to do this for you. DO NOT ATTEMPT unless you know what you are doing this can make things worse for you should you attempt this without knowing what you are doing.

Mac vs. PC

We have probably all (here in the US at least) seen the commercials that Macintosh has been putting out about a young hip guy representing the Mac and the old stuffy professional with no sense of humor as the PC. Here are some more comparisons but before we get to that we should qualify what we mean by PC since essentially the Mac is a PC. So when we say PC we mean the famous Windows / Intel combo or as some people have dubbed it, Wintel.
The Macintosh platform has gotten a lot of great reviews and has been said by professionals to have a more stable accessible platform than the Windows operating systems. However, you can run Windows on Mac and it seems to run well on Mac as well as on a PC. But it is a matter of preference and if you are used to the Windows operating systems and platform you may not be comfortable with the Macs Leopard operating system. There is a learning curve to both operating systems.
The Mac consistently has been higher rated for graphics development so if you design a lot of graphics or do a lot of photo editing you may want to give Mac a try. If your computer is your work station and word processor you may want to go with Wintel. PC consistently has more and better programs for general work a day related activities. Most graphics programs are made for both operating systems.
But in a run down test of benchmarking speeds and generally testing of user friendly interfacing with programs, the Mac out-performed in every area. This information comes from Popular Mechanics magazine that did their own testing and outsourced to two different companies to get the most unbiased results that they could.
You should understand that even though the Mac has been rated as a better product in computers by many, it’s about you and what you want and need. So if you are comfortable with the Windows PC then by all means stick with it. A computer is a tool to get the job done or as an interface for gaming - nothing more and nothing less than what you use it for.
